Cream Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Mahal Series

The cream is not one cream. This is the Mahal Series Handwoven Vintage-Pattern Cream Wool Rug, 170 × 240 cm or 5'7" by 7'10", and the traditional dyeing has given its ground several layers at once: powder pink and beige running through it, faded red surfacing here and there.

01Knot by knot, by hand

Wool surface over a cotton foundation, knotted by hand. The pattern underneath all of that has been deliberately worn back. Vintage drawing, faint enough to read as a shadow of itself, so a rug that looks plain from the doorway turns out at close range to carry a full design. Slight waves in the weave add to the impression of something already lived on.

02The geography of the weave

It sits as comfortably beside plain modern furniture as beside classical. Mahal rugs are knotted in Afghanistan and in Pakistan, with the double knot Anatolia uses — a symmetrical knot tied round two warps, slower to work and firmer in the hold.

03How it feels underfoot

All of the pile is wool. Underneath, cotton takes the strain, and a little synthetic yarn is spun into it for strength; rather than describe the rug as wholly natural, the house names that synthetic.

04Which tone on the ground

Pile is short and the handle is hard, which is why it takes chair castors and heavy traffic better than a deep rug would. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan and Pakistan; the knot is the Anatolian double. The pile is all wool; beneath it, cotton carrying a trace of synthetic yarn. 170 × 240 cm. Cream built from many tones by traditional dyeing, with pink, beige and faded red inside it. Vintage drawing left faint, almost a shadow on the ground. Short pile and a hard surface — it survives office chairs. Professional washing. A room that must look calm and also take punishment is a hard brief, and this is one of the few rugs that answers it.
