Green Frame-Pattern Handwoven Mohair Rug, Mohair Series

Mohair, not sheep's wool: a green handwoven mohair rug of 76 × 198 cm (2'6" × 6'6"), made in Türkiye, its ground carrying Oushak framing in cream and small flowers in burgundy. Mohair comes from the Angora goat and is rarely knotted into pile at all, which accounts for most of what is unusual here. One of one. Green is the ground and everything answers to it. The framing borders are drawn in cream, so the edges read light while the field stays deep, and the small flower heads scattered inside the frame are picked out in burgundy and a paler green that turns nearly gray under a lamp.

01From the hand of the weaver

This is a bedroom size and it behaves like one: quiet from the doorway, detailed once you are standing on it barefoot. The knotting was done by hand in Türkiye. Mohair staple is long and takes a shine, so the pile catches light in bands rather than evenly and the rug looks different from the two ends of a room. It holds its shape and its handle in the way that suits a floor you step onto before you step onto anything else in the morning.
