Beige Floral Handwoven Mohair Rug, Mohair Series

Mohair — the long, lustrous fleece of the Angora goat — is the whole surface of this handwoven rug: a beige ground carrying rose heads and fine vines in pale pink, set over traditional Oushak motifs, in two sizes, 204 × 298 cm and 208 × 298 cm.

01Knot by knot, by hand

It is woven in Türkiye, entirely by hand. Roses are drawn open here rather than in bud, with the vines running thin between them, and the Oushak framework underneath gives the whole arrangement somewhere to sit.

02Color that shifts through the day

Pale pink over beige is a narrow tonal range and it was chosen that way: nothing on the rug is more than two steps from anything else, so the pattern is legible up close and settles into a single warm tone from across a room.

03How it feels underfoot

Beside walnut or oak the pink turns almost peach. Mohair takes dye more brightly than sheep's wool and holds a luster sheep's wool does not, so it keeps its shine as it ages rather than losing it. The fiber is also springy, and the pile recovers after furniture has stood on it.

04From the hand of the weaver

Handwoven rugs made in Türkiye grow fewer every year, and this is one of the ones still being woven. Pale pink and beige do not hide anything, so it belongs in a sitting room or a bedroom rather than a hallway. Handwoven in Türkiye, entirely by hand, in a diminishing craft. Mohair fleece throughout the surface, which is where the luster comes from. Beige ground, pale pink roses and vines, traditional Oushak motifs beneath the floral drawing.
