Green Floral Oushak Handwoven Mohair Rug

Mohair is angora goat hair, and it is almost never used for rugs; this handwoven one is mohair throughout. Green ground, Oushak motifs and flowers together, 203 × 291 cm (6'8" × 9'7"), woven in Türkiye.

01After the color

Mohair is softer and stronger than sheep's wool at the same weight, which is why a floor made of it behaves differently underfoot. The palette is light green with pastel burgundy set into it, and the two are close enough in value that neither takes over.

02Up close to the pattern

Oushak motifs supply the frame and the flowers fill it. The combination is old and the softness of the color is not, and the result sits against oak and walnut without going heavy. In a traditionally furnished sitting room it does what a classical rug is meant to do: it holds the floor and lets everything above it stay quieter. Made by hand in Türkiye, at a moment when hand weaving here is shrinking rather than growing. Mohair is the point of the series.

03The Wool on the surface

The fiber takes dye brilliantly and keeps its resilience, so the pile springs back instead of flattening under furniture, and that is also why the surface has more shine than plain wool of the same construction would.

04The origin of the pattern

It should be professionally washed, and mohair rewards not being cleaned too often. Handwoven in Türkiye, entirely in mohair.
