On the surface: Wool, Natural. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is cream, green.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Angora goat hair throughout, roses and Oushak motifs on cream
Mohair is the whole story here — the fleece of the Angora goat, longer and glossier than sheep's wool and slower to felt — and this rug is woven from it throughout. Cream Floral Handwoven Mohair Rug, 228 × 284 cm (7'6" × 9'4"), made in Türkiye, with Oushak motifs and roses drawn over a cream ground in pale green and soft burgundy.
A single piece. What mohair gives a rug is shine without slipperiness. The fiber reflects light along its length, so the cream ground shifts between ivory and pale gold as the day moves across it, and the pile stays soft underfoot instead of hardening into the mat that dense wool can become.
The drawing over that ground is classical Anatolian: Uşak forms in the field, rose leaves and blossoms filling the intervals, all of it in colors that stay a step below full saturation so nothing shouts. Weaving was done by hand, in Türkiye, and pieces of this fiber are produced there in smaller and smaller numbers, which is a statement about who is still at the loom rather than a sales line.
Pale green and dulled burgundy are the colors that put it beside wood: walnut, cherry, anything with a warm grain. One thing about mohair to weigh before buying — a glossy pile takes the mark of whichever way it was last brushed, so a footprint stays visible until the pile is set back. If that would bother you, this is not your rug. Handwoven in Türkiye, wholly from Angora goat fleece. Cream ground with Oushak motifs and rose drawing in pale green and burgundy. Mohair reflects along the length of the fiber, so the ground shifts between ivory and pale gold. Soft underfoot, and slower to mat than a dense sheep's-wool pile. 228 × 284 cm (7'6" × 9'4"), for sitting rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. The pile shows brush marks and footfalls until it is set back. Rugs woven from this fiber in Türkiye are getting fewer every year. What is mohair, and how does it differ from wool? Mohair comes from the Angora goat rather than from a sheep.
The fiber is longer, smoother and more reflective than wool, which is why a mohair pile has a natural shine, feels silkier underfoot and resists matting for longer under the same amount of traffic. Does mohair need different care from wool? It needs the same principle applied more carefully. The fiber is smoother, so it releases grit easily under a vacuum, but its shine is easily dulled by harsh detergent or heat.
Cleaning should be left to a washer who has handled mohair before. Shine of this kind does not survive rough treatment, and the rug will tell you within a year whether it was put in the right room.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
