Gray Vintage Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Retro Series

01The origin of the pattern

Traditional Oushak motifs, redrawn in gray. There is one. Look at it from one end of the room and it is bright; walk to the other end and the same rug is dark and matt. That is the pile lying in one direction, and it is the most useful thing about a gray rug — the floor changes as people move through the room instead of sitting there as a slab of color.

02The mark of slow weaving

The gray itself is deep rather than pale, arrived at by washing and dyeing the yarn before weaving rather than by treating the finished rug, and the old Oushak drawing sits inside it as texture more than as pattern. The double knot ties each tuft around two warps, and the knot count here is high, which is where the durability comes from and why a rug three meters long stays flat.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool over cotton makes it lighter than its size suggests, and a trace of recycled synthetic yarn is worked into the skeleton for strength. The pile is short and dense and it sheds very little.

05The Wool on the surface
