On the surface: Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is brown.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Coffee-dark brown, motifs a shade off the ground, 167 × 231 cm
Look at it once and it is a brown rug; look again and the pattern comes up in layers, one drawing beneath another. Retro Series Dark Brown Handwoven Wool Rug, 167 × 231 cm (5'6" × 7'7"), wool knotted over a cotton warp in Afghanistan, using the double knot. The brown is the dark, slightly bitter tone of strong coffee, and the classical motifs are worked in shades so near it that they separate only on inspection. Nothing is ornate and nothing is bare.
The surface sits on the line between shine and matt, so it takes in the colors of a room instead of imposing one, and a piece this quiet is easier to live with over years than a loud one. It will not swallow a space; it breathes along with it. Craftsmen knot it by hand over a cotton warp, doubling each knot, and that doubling is where the strength of a thin rug comes from; a trace of recycled synthetic yarn is worked into the skeleton for the same reason.
At 167 × 231 cm it fits a smaller sitting room, a study, or the side of a bed. Centuries-old drawing has been re-colored for contemporary rooms — that is the whole idea of the series, and it is stated rather than implied. It sheds almost nothing.
Give it to a rug washer rather than trying anything at home. Handwoven in Afghanistan, double-knotted for strength. Wool over a cotton warp: thin, dense and durable. A trace of recycled synthetic yarn in the skeleton, for strength. 167 × 231 cm (5'6" × 7'7") — a study, a small sitting room, a bedside. Dark coffee brown, with classical motifs worked in close tones. Between matt and lustrous, depending on where the light comes from. Traditional drawing, deliberately re-colored for modern rooms. Very low shedding. One piece.
Washing through a rug specialist. It is the rug that gets noticed in the second year rather than the first week, and that is usually the better order.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
