On the surface: Wool, Viscose, Cotton. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in India. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Brick-red flecks on cream, 98 × 55 cm of hand knotting
At 98 × 55 cm (3'3" × 1'10") this is a mat rather than a room rug: a handwoven Sultanahmet Series piece, wool over a cotton foundation, a cream ground, soft brown scrollwork gathered toward the middle and a narrow border of brick-red motifs holding it in.
Woven in India, and there is only the one. The border is drawn as a frame rather than a band, so the effect is closer to a small framed picture set down on the floor than to a rug — the scrolls collect toward the center and the brick-red flecks along the edge keep the eye from wandering off it.
Brown against cream at this scale reads soft rather than dark. In a hall it takes one step; beside a bed it takes the first foot down in the morning; in front of a low bookcase it marks a spot instead of filling one. Wool on the surface, cotton in the foundation, viscose worked into the motifs where the brown needs to catch light.
Viscose is spun from cellulose, which is why those lines lift slightly out of the matte wool around them under a lamp. It is knotted by hand in India, and even at this size the count climbs into the tens of thousands — months of work for a piece of floor no bigger than a doormat.
Day to day it takes a vacuum and a damp cloth; a full wash belongs to a workshop. Handwoven in India; wool surface, cotton foundation, viscose in the motifs. Cream ground with brown scrollwork and a narrow brick-red border. The border is a frame, so the pattern gathers at the middle instead of repeating. 98 × 55 cm (3'3" × 1'10") — bedside, entryway, or in front of a shelf. Medium thickness and a firm weave; it sweeps and wipes easily. Sits comfortably against dark stained wood. The knot count climbs into the tens of thousands. One piece. It will take the first step of most mornings, and it was built for that job.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
