Cream Floral Handwoven Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series

Small flowers, drawn thinly and spaced far apart, cover a cream field that gives back most of the light falling on it. This is a Sultanahmet Series rug handwoven in India, 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), a wool pile over a cotton foundation, the flowers picked out in bamboo viscose.

01Color that shifts through the day

There is one of them. Nothing in the palette moves more than half a step: cream, a slightly deeper cream, beige. The consequence is a rug that lifts a dim room instead of anchoring a bright one — it brightens a floor the way a pale wall brightens a wall.

02How it feels underfoot

The flower drawing gives it plenty to look at close up and almost nothing at a distance, which is exactly what people want under a dining table and exactly what they do not want as the single object in an empty room. The foundation is cotton, closely knotted; the pile is wool; bamboo viscose runs through the flowers, where its shine is what makes them findable at all.

03From the hand of the weaver

The whole thing was knotted by hand over months. Solid walnut furniture suits it and so does anything else in the same tonal range. A cream rug in a house with a dog, or with a front door straight onto the street, is a maintenance decision as much as an aesthetic one.
