Cream and Cinnamon Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series

A Sultanahmet Series rug in cream, carrying finely drawn Oushak motifs in earth and cinnamon, 169 × 238 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), handwoven in India. The cotton is the foundation, the wool is the pile, and the bamboo viscose in the pattern is where all the shine is.

01The origin of the pattern

One piece. The motifs are spaced rather than packed — regular but not crowded, so the eye moves across the field instead of stopping in it. Earth and cinnamon on cream is a low-contrast pairing, and the effect is of a rug that has been in the room a long time rather than one that arrived last week.

02From ground to pile

It sits comfortably in front of a sofa, under a bed, or in the run between two rooms, and it wants walnut or another dark solid wood nearby to give the cinnamon something to answer. Wool for the pile, cotton for the foundation, and bamboo viscose — this house's single name for what is sold elsewhere as bamboo silk — worked into the motifs, where its fine shine lifts them a shade out of the matte ground.

03Coming off the loom
