Cream and Beige Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series

Sultanahmet Series, in cream: a light field on which the Oushak motifs are drawn so faintly they behave like shadows, appearing and going as the light moves. 180 × 245 cm (5'11" × 8'0"), woven by hand in India, wool pile over a cotton foundation, bamboo viscose in the pattern.

01The mark of slow weaving

There is one. The relief is slight and done by hand — run a palm across the field and the motifs are a fraction higher than the ground around them. Bamboo viscose is what gives them their silky finish, and between the raised height and the shine they catch a low sun and then vanish under an overhead light.

02How it feels underfoot

Everything about the color is held back: cream on cream, warmed with beige, with almost no tonal contrast to argue with a wall. Wool, cotton and bamboo viscose, all in one rug, each in the place it belongs — cotton in the foundation for tension, wool in the pile for wear, bamboo viscose in the motifs for light.

03From the hand of the weaver

Nothing in it is machine-made, and at this size the knot count means months at the loom. It suits a mid-sized living room, a bedroom, or an entrance, and it goes with walnut and other solid dark woods.

04The Wool on the surface

Keep it vacuumed; when it needs more, a specialist. Handwoven in India, with cotton underneath, wool in the pile and bamboo viscose in the motifs. Cream on cream, warmed with beige, at very low tonal contrast. A slight hand-worked relief raises the motifs above the field. The pattern appears in low, angled light and flattens under an overhead bulb. 180 × 245 cm (5'11" × 8'0"). Months at the loom, at a count running into the tens of thousands. Professional washing; easy day-to-day care. One piece. Hang a strong light directly above it and most of what was paid for disappears; put a lamp at the far end of the room and it comes back.
