Gray Plain Loom-Woven Wool Runner

A plain gray loom-woven wool runner, 80 × 300 cm (2'7" × 9'10"), with no line or motif anywhere on it — only gray shading into gray, and one paler band of cream drifting through. It was woven in India on wool and cotton for Halıcızade, in a small run. The Turkish description calls it a foggy morning and that is right: not one line on the whole surface is drawn.

01After the color

The tone is neither dark nor light but keeps moving between the two, and the cream layer running through it works like a break in the weather rather than like a stripe. A plain rug in a narrow space has to hold attention with tone alone, which is a harder thing to weave than a pattern — any unevenness in the dye shows immediately, and here the unevenness is the point. Wool sits on a cotton foundation and the pile is thick and closely packed, so the runner has weight to it and stays where it is put.

02From the hand of the weaver

Loom weaving puts it between the two constructions buyers usually compare — it has much of the hand of a knotted rug, and it comes off the loom in a fraction of the hours. Only a limited number were made to this design.

03Color, by the light

The drawback of a pale gray at this width is honest enough to state — it will show what a dark rug hides, and a hallway is where shoes come off. Have it cleaned by a firm that washes rugs. Loom-woven in India: wool over cotton. Graded gray with a paler cream band, and no drawn pattern at all. Thick, densely packed pile with real weight in the hand. 80 × 300 cm (2'7" × 9'10") — a corridor, a narrow kitchen, a long landing. Made in a limited run for Halıcızade. A pale ground shows marks a dark one hides. A professional wash, when it needs one. A single piece. Plain rugs are bought last and kept longest, and the gray ones outlive the fashions that sold them.
