Anthracite Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Heritage Series

Kütahya, in western Anatolia, is where this rug is made, on looms that put machine structure and hand finishing on the same piece. It is anthracite, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), with medallions and curling vegetal drawing left deliberately faint, a wool surface, viscose inside the motifs and a cotton foundation. The motifs were never meant to be sharp. They are set into the weave at low contrast so the rug arrives looking as though it has already spent thirty years in a house, and light and dark anthracite are layered against each other to deepen that impression.

01What Wool does

Where viscose was used, cherry-burgundy details catch light the surrounding wool absorbs, so the faded drawing carries small bright points inside it. The effect is closer to an old photograph than to an old rug. Loom-woven is the middle construction: a machine lays the structure down, hand work completes it, and the result comes near the look of a knotted rug without being one — the house does not claim otherwise. Wool makes up most of the surface, viscose appears only where a motif needs to shine, and the foundation is cotton.

The series is made in small quantities, mostly by women weavers around Kütahya, so no two pieces come out quite alike. It sheds very little and vacuums easily.
