Round Gray and Orange Vintage-Pattern Wool Rug, Tempus Series

Round, in three sizes across, the middle of them 160 cm (5'3"). The ground is gray and the vintage motifs on it are orange and unmistakable, the pile is wool over a cotton warp, and the whole thing is loom-woven in the Aegean region of Türkiye. A circle changes what a pattern has to do.

01Reading the motif

There is no field and no border in the usual sense, so the drawing has to work outward from a center, and the orange motifs are placed to be read from any side of the room rather than from the foot of a sofa.

02Which tone on the ground

Gray keeps the composition sober; orange stops it from being polite. The pairing is why the rug lands equally in a modern room and a room full of older furniture — the gray answers the first and the orange answers the second. The pile is medium-height and closely set, which gives it the hand of a knotted rug without the years a knotted rug takes, and the tight setting means dirt sits high in the pile where a vacuum can reach it.

A tree-of-life mark woven into the piece says it was made for this house and no other. The 120 cm size is small for a living room and exactly right under a round dining table or in the turn of a stair hall, which is what most of them are bought for.
