Gray Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool and Tencel Rug, Günyolu Series

The longest piece in this range is a 90 × 590 cm (2'11" × 19'4") runner — nearly six meters of gray, with flowers and spirals so faded into the ground that from one end you would call it plain.

01What the yarn is

This is the Günyolu series, loom-woven in Kütahya and Oushak from wool and Tencel® on a cotton foundation. There are eleven sizes; the largest of them is 300 × 390 cm. Small orange and salmon details are what wake the gray up.

02When you walk in

They are not accents in the decorative sense — there are too few of them for that — but they sit at intervals across the field and give the eye somewhere to land, and without them the rug would go dead.

03After the color

The pattern whispers rather than announces, which puts it exactly between a classical rug and a minimal one, and that is the room it belongs in: high ceilings, bare concrete or plaster, upholstery in light gray, cream and earth tones. It deepens a scheme instead of stepping out of it. Günyolu is a mountain village in Kemaliye, in Erzincan, and the series took the name from it.

04What Wool does

Wool and Tencel® are woven together over cotton, and the two fibers are doing opposite jobs: the wool is warm and matt, the Tencel® catches light, and the faded look is produced by that conversation rather than by any washing or over-dyeing.

It comes off the looms at Kütahya and Oushak, worked largely by women, with hand labor and machine knotting in the same piece. Every rug carries its own weave number, so no two leave the workshop with the same identity, and the Halıcızade mark — a tree of life — sits quietly in the field.
