Multicolor Geometric Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zade Series

What is unusual about this one is that it has no center. The Zade Series Multicolor Geometric Rug is a loom-woven Tencel® and cotton rug of 6'7" × 9'10" in feet and 200 × 300 cm in metric, built out of horizontal bands, rectangular panels and small dotted ornaments in red, beige, mustard and pale tones — a sequence to be read along rather than a medallion to be looked at. Each band draws on a different corner of Anatolian weaving, so the rug behaves less like a pattern than like a row of quotations: a village motif here, a border fragment there, a run of dots that could have come off a saddlebag.

01Which tone on the ground

None of the colors is allowed to lead. Red, beige and mustard sit at similar weight, and the Tencel® fiber trades matt for bright as the light moves, so the whole surface breathes rather than sits. Halıcızade started the Zade series from a plain remark in the design room — let us make new rugs — and this is the piece that went furthest from the classical.

02Knot by knot, by hand

It is woven on looms in the Oushak district, and the fringes are then knotted by women in the region, one loop at a time. Cotton and Tencel® make the surface soft with a faint coolness, at a low pile that drops little.

03What the yarn is

Tencel® is a branded lyocell fiber; the house holds the license for the name. Loom-woven in the Oushak district; the fringes are hand-knotted afterwards in the villages. Cotton and Tencel® yarn — soft, faintly cool, with a low pile. Horizontal bands, rectangular panels and dotted ornaments in red, beige, mustard and pale tones. No central medallion; the rug is read across rather than into. 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), for a living room or a wide hall. Matt and bright trade places across the surface as the light moves. Professional washing; the fiber does not want soaking at home. It is the Zade piece for someone who likes old rugs but has stopped wanting a medallion in the middle of the room.
