The story of this rug

The name is a Turkish phrase. Baş başa — head to head — is what Halıcızade calls the state of a person left alone with their own soul and with the Creator, and it names this loom-woven prayer rug: wool surface over a cotton foundation, 80 × 130 cm (2'7" × 4'3"), woven in Anatolia, deep navy under a broad red field with one small red point in the middle. The navy is not flat.

01Color that shifts through the day

Tones move inside it, and the effect is nearer to water than to sky — motion held still. The red band across the upper part rises out of that quiet like a line of light along a night horizon. The point in the middle does the actual work here: it gathers the attention and gives it somewhere to settle.

02Coming off the loom

Everything else has been taken away deliberately. The surface is wool and the foundation cotton, loom-woven in Anatolia with hand and machine each doing part of the job. Once it leaves the loom the fringes are handed to women in nearby villages and knotted strand by strand. Shedding and dust release are both slight, which matters in something rolled and unrolled every day. Professional washing. Loom-woven in Anatolia, machine and hand work combined. The design was reduced on purpose, to leave as little as possible to look at. Fringe work done off the loom, by hand, in local households. Very little shedding. Professional washing. What does Baş Başa mean? It is Turkish for head to head, or alone together.

Halıcızade uses the phrase for the condition of a person who has withdrawn from everything else to be with their own soul and with the Creator. The rug is named for that condition, not for a place or a pattern. Why is this prayer rug so plain? Because the design is doing the opposite of decorating.

03Color, by the light

Pattern and color have been reduced to a navy ground, one red field and a single red point, so that there is almost nothing on the surface to hold the eye. The point in the middle is the only thing left to look at. Every loop of it was tied in Anatolia, and the thing it was made to hold is a few minutes of quiet.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
