Yellow Oushak-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zade Series

Oushak — Uşak, in western Anatolia — has been weaving the same family of large-scale floral drawings since the sixteenth century, and that is the pattern on this rug: a yellow ground with the Oushak arrangement across it, loom-woven in Türkiye in Tencel® over cotton, and with no wool in it. Oushak drawings are large where Persian ones are fine.

01Up close to the pattern

The motifs are set out generously and spaced apart, so the rug reads clearly from across a room and does not dissolve into detail when you come near it — that openness is why the pattern survived into modern interiors when denser classical drawings did not. Here it sits on yellow, framed at the edge, with flowering forms and a tree of life inside the field.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Yellow is the difficult ground: clean and straw-colored in daylight, and under a warm bulb it moves toward gold and takes the rest of the room with it. Zade rugs are loom-woven — a mechanical process underneath, a manual one at the edges — and Halıcızade says outright that this is not fully hand-woven work.

03What the yarn is

Tencel® is a lyocell fiber made from wood pulp; light behaves on it much the way it behaves on silk, and on a yellow ground that shine is the main event. Cotton runs through the body beneath it. What Tencel® will not take is rough treatment — this is a surface for a sitting room rather than a hallway, and it should be sent out when it needs washing. Loom-woven in Türkiye — machine below, hand at the finish. Tencel® face over cotton; wool-free edge to edge.
