Silver and Gold Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Rug, Heritage Series

Small golden flowers, drawn fine and set close, are the first thing you see. They sit on a silver ground and dissolve in waves toward the lower end, as though the pattern were being forgotten.

01How it feels underfoot

A loom-woven rug, 160 × 230 cm (5'3" × 7'7"), New Zealand wool with viscose in the flowers and cotton beneath, made in Kütahya. Silver is a cool gray and gold is a warm yellow, and putting them together is the whole gamble of the design.

02Up close to the pattern

It works because the gold is used sparingly — as line rather than as area — so the flowers register as warmth without turning the rug yellow. The dissolving passage at one end is woven in, not worn: the motifs thin out row by row until only the ground is left.

03The Wool on the surface

That gives the piece a direction, which most rugs do not have, and it is worth laying so the dense end meets the room's entrance. Viscose is spun from cellulose and takes light like silk; here it carries the flowers, so the gold brightens and dims as you cross the room while the wool ground stays constant.

04Knot by knot, by hand

The construction starts on a loom in Kütahya and is completed by hand. Viscose does not tolerate home cleaning products and will mark under a wet glass, so use a coaster and send it out to be washed.

Vacuum on suction only. Loom-woven in Kütahya and finished by hand. New Zealand wool and viscose in the surface, cotton in the foundation. Golden floral motifs on a silver ground, thinning away toward one end. The viscose flowers brighten and dim with your position; the wool ground does not. The pattern has a direction — lay the dense end toward the door. 160 × 230 cm (5'3" × 7'7") — a standard living-room size. Viscose marks under a wet glass and rejects home cleaners; wash professionally. A limited Heritage piece. Silver floors read as expensive in photographs and as calm in person, and only the second of those matters after the first week.
