Motifs from several different Anatolian weaving regions have been set side by side on one surface here — flowers out of one tradition, geometry out of another, older drawings out of a third — in navy, orange, green, burgundy and earth tones.

01The mark of slow weaving

Multicolor Patchwork Handwoven Wool Runner, Anadolu Şal Series, 82 × 296 cm (2'8" × 9'9"), woven in Anatolia. One of one. A patchwork of this kind is a record as much as a design: each panel comes from a district that drew that way, and the joins are where the districts meet. The length gives the sequence somewhere to go, so walking a corridor takes you through the panels one at a time instead of showing you all of them at once.

02After the color

On pale parquet in an entrance the color is the welcome. Along a white hallway hung with thin black frames the color is the only warmth in the passage, and that turns out to be enough. Between a kitchen and a dining area it puts movement between rows of single-color cupboards. It is made in Anatolia, over months, by women who have kept the tradition working.

03What Wool does

The yarn is first-class wool, which is where the soft hand, the natural sheen and the body of the runner come from. The number of people still working this way is falling, which is the honest reason a piece like this cannot be reordered. Each runner comes out with its own small departures from the last.

04Which furniture, which room

In a dressing room it goes in front of the wardrobes; at the side of a bed it is what the first step of the morning lands on; on a covered balcony with wooden furniture and plants it does the work of a floor.

05The tone of the ground

Professional washing. Anatolian work, over months, by women who have kept the technique alive. First-class wool yarn — soft to the hand, naturally lustrous, with body enough to walk on. Patchwork panels drawn from several different Anatolian traditions. Navy, orange, green, burgundy and earth tones across the length. 82 × 296 cm (2'8" × 9'9") — an entrance, a long corridor, a passage between rooms. Sits with light oak or walnut furniture, black metal detail and plain surroundings. Each runner differs slightly; this one is not repeated. Professional washing. Corridors get the least thought and the most traffic in a house, which is a decent argument for putting something slow in them.
