Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is gray.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Ten square meters of low-contrast gray, wool above cotton
Ten and a third square meters is more rug than most rooms can take, and that is worth stating first: 279 × 371 cm (9'2" × 12'2"). A handwoven abstract in gray, wool pile above a cotton foundation, made in India, in the Aren series.
Measure the floor before ordering, because a piece at this footprint cannot be tucked anywhere. The drawing is abstract, and the contrast is deliberately low — marks placed across a gray ground rather than a repeating figure — and at this size that restraint is doing real work.
A strongly patterned rug of ten square meters would take a room over completely; a quiet one at the same size sets the floor and leaves the argument to whatever stands on it. Gray is the most negotiable of the neutrals, going cool beside white walls and blue upholstery and warm beside oak and brass, so the same rug reads two different ways depending on the room it lands in. Handwoven in India in wool, with cotton in the warp and weft where the load sits.
Weaving an area this large by hand takes months, and the physical evidence of it is in the rows: across three and a half meters the drawing wanders slightly, because a person set every part of it. Weight is the practical consequence — a rug of ten square meters is a two-person job to move and a difficult one to lift for cleaning, which is another argument for having it done professionally rather than at home. Handwoven in India; wool pile on a cotton warp and weft. Low-contrast abstract marks across a gray ground, with no repeat. 279 × 371 cm (9'2" × 12'2"), about 10.3 square meters. Months of weaving, and slight drift in the drawing over the length. Gray reads cool against white and blue, warm against oak and brass. Heavy: two people to move it, and awkward to lift for cleaning. Professional washing only.
One piece at this size. A rug this size ceases to be an object placed in a room and turns into the room's floor, which is either exactly what was wanted or a mistake that is hard to undo.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
