On the surface: Natural, Bamboo. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is gray.
This rug is woven in Nepal. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Gray easing into pastel, wool and bamboo viscose over cotton
Eighty centimeters wide and three meters long — 80 × 300 cm (2'7" × 9'10") — this is a hand-knotted bamboo viscose runner made in India, gray shading through pastel, with damask motifs held back for the two ends.
The surface is bamboo viscose on a cotton foundation, knotted at high density. There is one of it. A runner has to be read in one direction, and this one is drawn accordingly: the long middle is left almost bare, a gray field graded softly into pastel, and the damask detail is placed at the head and the foot where a corridor actually stops.
Walk it and the pattern arrives twice, at the beginning and the end, with three meters of quiet in between. Gray is neutral enough to sit under any wall color, and because the tone shifts rather than steps, the rug does not divide a narrow hall into segments the way a repeating pattern would. Every knot in it was set by hand in India, and set closely, with bamboo viscose forming the surface over a cotton foundation.
Spun from cellulose, bamboo viscose handles light in the way silk does, so the sheen you can see belongs to the fiber and not to a finish. Press it and it gives immediately — that softness is the honest measure of what this fiber is. It is also the reason it belongs in a hall rather than a kitchen, and the reason it should never see a domestic wet clean. Knotted entirely by hand in India, at a close knot count. Bamboo viscose surface on a cotton foundation. Gray graded into pastel, with damask detail at both ends only. 80 × 300 cm (2'7" × 9'10") — long corridors, entrance halls, the side of a bed. Natural sheen from the fiber itself, not from a surface treatment. Pairs with light oak, white, cream and smoke-gray furniture. Keep it out of kitchens; professional cleaning only. One runner in this size. Long halls usually get a rug because the floor is loud; this one answers that without adding an argument of its own.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
