Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is gray.
Woven in 3 sizes, from 90 × 300 cm to 200 × 300 cm. There is no difference that makes the small size cheap and the large size expensive; the calculation uses the same square-meter rate in every size.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Silver-gray at 175 × 245 cm, the damask figures drawn open
The shine in the figures is bamboo viscose and nothing else — no finish, no treatment. Gray Damask Hand-Knotted Rug: wool, cotton and bamboo viscose tied row by row over an Indian cotton warp, with a classical damask drawing standing pale against a gray ground, at 175 × 245 cm. Damask is a figured drawing rather than a repeated block, and the figures here are drawn open, with enough gray between them that the rug reads as a soft field from across the room and only resolves into stems and blossoms when you are standing on it.
Gray in this tone is close to silver and behaves accordingly: it goes bright where daylight falls across the pile and drops to a flat pewter where it does not. Beside white, cream or pale oak the rug is quiet; beside black, navy or dark oak it stops being quiet and becomes the contrast in the room. The knots are set close and every row is tied by hand, which is why the drawing holds its edges at this scale.
Wool and cotton carry the ground, bamboo viscose carries the figures, and the foundation underneath is cotton — three yarns doing three jobs. Bamboo viscose is a cellulose fiber, sold elsewhere as bamboo silk; this house does not use that name. It also means the surface takes footmarks, and they stay until somebody sweeps the pile the other way. Hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation, at a close knot spacing. Wool and cotton in the ground, bamboo viscose in the damask figures. 175 × 245 cm (5'9" × 8'0"); the design is also made at 90 × 300 cm and 200 × 300 cm. Silver-gray that brightens under daylight and flattens under a lamp. The figures are drawn open, with gray showing between them. Footmarks show on the viscose and brush out. Washing by a rug specialist. Damask has been in and out of fashion for four hundred years, and it survives because it is the one classical drawing that does not insist on classical furniture around it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
