The fiber comes first here: jute, the plant they call golden fiber along the Ganges, spun and plaited by hand into a flat off-white surface. The white is not uniform and was never meant to be. Jute takes color unevenly, so the surface moves between chalk and warm off-white across a single row, and the plaited structure sets up a regular ridge you notice with your feet before you notice with your eyes.

01The origin of the pattern

There is no pattern beyond that rhythm. In an entrance hall, a conservatory or a kitchen it does what a plain floor covering should do and nothing more. Every part of it is worked by hand, which is why the rows shift slightly against each other, and it wants to be treated as the plant material it is.

02From ground to pile

Jute absorbs very little, so day-to-day dirt sits on the surface and sweeps off. It also does not wash: water is the one thing that will finish it. Castors and heels will crush the plait, so keep a desk chair off it.

04What Jute does

Jute plaits into a finer surface and feels gentler underfoot, and it is the more forgiving of the two in a room where people go barefoot. Why can this rug not be washed? Jute swells and stiffens when it is soaked, and the plaited structure loses its shape as it dries.

05How it is protected

Surface cleaning keeps it in condition: sweep or vacuum it, lift spills straight away, and use dry cleaning when it needs more than that. It will pale slowly wherever the sun reaches it, and the fibers will soften where people walk. Both are the material behaving normally.
