On the surface: Natural, Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is beige.
This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Copper through mink, bamboo viscose in the drawing
Like a wall of unpolished plaster that someone has run a copper wire through: a hand-knotted rug in beige, 244 × 302 cm (8'0" × 9'11"), knotted in India in wool with bamboo viscose worked into the abstract motifs.
Cream, beige, mink, gold and copper, on a densely knotted wool ground. This is the only piece at this size. The design has no repeat and no border. Forms drift across the field, some of them barely darker than the ground, a few of them picked out in copper and gold where the bamboo viscose sits.
Viscose reflects and wool does not, so those passages read metallic from one side of the room and vanish from the other — the pattern is legible from the doorway and half-gone from the sofa. Beige and mink carry everything between.
It is a large rug that changes as you cross it and stays quiet while you sit on it. Jaipur Rugs made it, in India, knotted by hand and packed tight — the density is what you feel first when you press a palm into it, and it is why the surface holds a flat, even plane rather than compressing into footprints.
Wool does the ground; bamboo viscose does the drawing. Bamboo viscose is what the house calls this fiber, in preference to bamboo silk, because it is a viscose and it behaves like one: soft, lustrous, and unforgiving of a domestic clean.
Send it to a specialist. Hand-knotted in India by Jaipur Rugs. Wool ground with bamboo viscose worked into the motifs. Cream, beige, mink, gold and copper, in an abstract field with no border. Tightly knotted — the density is audible when you press it. The viscose passages catch light from one direction and disappear from another. 244 × 302 cm (8'0" × 9'11") — a wide room; it will take a full seating group. Specialist cleaning only. A single piece in this size. Ten years of a room walking over it will pull the copper down toward the beige, and that is when it will look best.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
