On the surface: Wool, Natural. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads colorful.
This rug is made in India. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Points of color with no figure, wool and viscose from India
Held at the right angle it reads less like a pattern than like a poured terrazzo floor — small chips of color spread through a ground rather than drawn onto it. A handwoven rug in wool with viscose worked through it, made in India, running 245 × 309 cm (8'0" × 10'2"), abstract and multicolored.
Aren series, and one piece only. Aren means the brightest grain of sand that could be found in a desert, which explains the drawing better than any description of it would: single points of color scattered through a neutral field, catching light one at a time rather than forming a figure.
Nothing here repeats on a grid and nothing anchors the middle, so the composition holds up at any orientation and under furniture placed anywhere on it. Past seven and a half square meters — large enough for a whole sofa group to stand on the rug rather than beside it. Handwoven in India, in wool with viscose run through the drawing.
The two fibers do different jobs: wool absorbs light and holds the matt ground, while viscose reflects it, so the colored points lift away from the field instead of sitting flush in it. That is the whole optical trick of the rug, and it is the reason a photograph never quite shows it. The other side of a lustrous fiber is that it takes footmarks and records which way the pile was last swept. Professional washing, no domestic machine, and a plain vacuum head. Handwoven in India; wool ground with viscose worked through the motifs. Scattered abstract color points, with no repeat and no center. Wool holds a matt ground while viscose reflects, so the colors lift. 245 × 309 cm (8'0" × 10'2"), over seven and a half square meters. Large enough for an entire seating group to stand on the rug. The viscose content takes footmarks; brushing the pile clears them. Professional washing only.
A single piece. Scattered color has one advantage over a drawn pattern: nothing in the room can be placed wrong on it.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
