The story of this rug

Burgundy over tan, with cream drawing spread right across the field: a hand-knotted wool rug in the Oushak manner, 272 × 367 cm (8'11" × 12'0"). Oushak — Uşak in Turkish — is the weaving district of western Anatolia whose large, openly spaced patterns have been copied for four centuries.

01Where the Border comes from

This one was tied in India, and there is exactly one. The pattern is the Oushak kind rather than the Persian one: motifs drawn big, spaced generously, and a border that repeats a simplified version of whatever the field is doing.

02The tone of the ground

Burgundy holds the middle and tan carries the edges, while cream runs between them as outline rather than as a color of its own. The surface has a definite sheen. Manchester yarn was used in the weaving and it takes light along the pile, so the burgundy goes deep and almost brown from one end of the room and lifts back to red from the other. It came off an Indian loom, since that is where most Oushak-pattern weaving now happens — production of the pattern in Uşak itself has thinned to very little.

03The mark of slow weaving

The weave is packed tight, and that density is what keeps a field this open from looking thin. One practical thing is worth saying before anything else: 272 × 367 cm is close to nine feet by twelve, so it takes two people to lay it and a specialist to wash it.

04After the color

This is not a rug anyone moves on a whim. Hand-knotted in India, in the Oushak pattern of western Anatolia. Wool pile, closely packed, with Manchester yarn giving the surface its sheen. Burgundy field over tan, with the drawing outlined in cream. Large motifs widely spaced, in the Oushak manner rather than the Persian one. 272 × 367 cm (8'11" × 12'0") — a full living-room size, or a dining room with the chairs pulled out. Professional washing only. One piece, at these exact dimensions, and no second one behind it. Under dark walnut it settles and reads brown; in a white room on pale boards the red comes up and takes the whole floor.

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
