Black Classic Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Anatolia made it, decades ago, and Anatolia remade it: a black hand-knotted wool rug of 158 × 244 cm (5'2" × 8'0"), its classical motifs left in place and its pile taken down and re-colored. The finish is deliberately distressed, so the black is never even. It is a single piece. An uneven black is more useful than a solid one.

01After the color

The lighter passages are where the old pile wore thinnest, and they give the field a depth that a new rug in the same color cannot produce at any price. Traditional drawing sits inside all of it, geometric and regular, showing where the light finds it.

02What Wool does

Set among pale walls and pale furniture, the rug does something a picture cannot — it puts the weight at the bottom of the space, which is where furniture arrangements tend to want it. The pile is wool and it is tied onto cotton.

03Choosing the size

Shearing left the surface short, which makes the rug light for its size and easy to lay flat under a door. Black shows lint the way white shows dirt, and that is the honest drawback: it will want vacuuming more often than a mid-toned rug, not less.

04Where it is laid

Living rooms, offices, galleries and minimal interiors are where rugs like it end up. For a deep clean, a rug washer. Woven in Anatolia, and re-finished there: sheared, over-dyed, dried. Wool pile tied onto cotton. A deliberately uneven black, lighter where the old pile had worn. Classical geometric drawing, still complete under the color. 158 × 244 cm (5'2" × 8'0") — for a living room, a gallery or a large study. Black shows lint; expect to vacuum more often, not less.
