Beige Canyon-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Günyolu Series

In Kemaliye, in Erzincan, there is a gorge called the Karanlık Kanyon where for roughly one week a year the sun appears to set exactly through the gap. This rug is that week: a loom-woven Tencel® piece in gold and beige, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), rock walls rising on both sides and a watercourse running out toward the light. It is a landscape, but a still one. The cliffs are blocked in as broad tonal masses rather than drawn, the water is a pale channel down the middle, and the sun is a low warm patch on the horizon rather than a disc.

There is no drama in it — the composition holds you for a second and then lets you go, which is the correct behavior for something walked on daily. In a room of cream walls, oak and rush-seated chairs the floor becomes the picture.

01Coming off the loom

It suits people who want a narrative underfoot and no strong color anywhere. Tencel® over a 100% cotton foundation, worked on looms in Kütahya and Uşak that tie the knots, with the finishing done by hand.

02What Tencel does

The Tencel® is doing something specific here: it carries light along the fiber, so the golds shift through the day and the canyon walls seem to come forward in the morning and fall back in the afternoon. The house tree of life is worked into the design.

03At the loom in in Uşak
