Cream Abstract Loom-Woven Tencel® Rug, Zima Series

Zima was drawn around a line of Mevlana — how good it is to flow, without clouding and without freezing — and the rug does the same thing with color: a plain cream center that grows layered and indistinct as it reaches the edges, with soft beige, light earth and gray blurring into one another.

01From the hand of the weaver

Loom-woven in Kütahya and Oushak, Tencel® over a cotton foundation, in four sizes, the smallest of them 130 × 190 cm (4'3" × 6'3"). Nothing on the surface has an edge. The transitions are graded rather than drawn, so from a standing height the rug looks like a threshold between two lighter and darker states of the same room, and up close it turns out to have silver and mink in it as well as cream.

02The Tencel on the surface

Pale rugs of this kind usually go blank in a big space; this one holds because the layering gives the eye a direction to travel. Tencel® is spun from wood pulp and reflects light gently, which is what produces the flow across the surface, and the cotton foundation underneath is what keeps a soft fiber from moving.

03Knot by knot, by hand

The weaving is done around Kütahya and Oushak on looms that tie the knots, and the finishing is done by hand. The largest sizes are made for dining rooms and under wide coffee tables, and a runner of 90 × 390 cm (2'11" × 12'10") exists for a long hall. Loom-woven in Kütahya and Oushak, finished by hand. Tencel® in the surface, cotton in the foundation. Plain cream at the center, layering into beige, light earth, gray, silver and mink toward the edges. No drawn line anywhere — every transition is graded. Four sizes: 130 × 190, 200 × 300, 240 × 340 and a 90 × 390 cm runner. Professional washing; a pale surface repays doing it on time. Under a dining table it takes the worst a household can do to a rug, which is the job the biggest size was drawn for.
