01Color that shifts through the day

A Harem-series Oushak rug in burgundy, green and beige over brown, made in Türkiye at Çınar Halı from wool and silk. One piece. Given the floor it wants, the drawing repays it. Uşak motifs run across the brown at full scale, with burgundy carrying the weight of the field, green cooling it in the border work and beige lifting the whole where the pattern needs air. Brown is the ground that never dates, and at this size it does something specific to a room: it lowers the visual temperature of everything above it, so pale walls read cooler and dark furniture reads heavier.

02Coming off the loom

Rooms with old furniture in them are where this rug stops being a purchase and starts being an inheritance. The Harem series is built around one construction — the Gördes double knot, on Erzurum fleece from the first clip, with silk carried in the same pile — and this is what that construction produces at nine and a bit square meters. The labor involved is why the house treats the weaving class as rare rather than the design.

03What Wool does

Wool absorbs the wear and silk returns the light, and between them they rule out any domestic wash. Give it to a specialist. Hand-knotted at Çınar Halı, in Türkiye. The fleece is a first clip out of Erzurum, and silk goes in with it. The Gördes double knot, tied symmetrically over two warps.
