Cream Globe-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Hatıl Series

A hatıl is the timber tie-beam that holds the walls of an Anatolian stone house together, and the series takes its name from it. This one is a cream wool rug, loom-woven in Anatolia on a cotton foundation, with a globe set low in one corner and rays fanning out from beneath it in orange and gray.

01The origin of the pattern

It measures 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"). Most of the rug is empty cream, and that emptiness is what makes the figure work. The globe sits off-center rather than in the middle, the rays spread from below it across the open ground like a track already traveled, and the whole composition points somewhere instead of sitting still.

02The tone of the ground

Orange carries the light, gray holds it down. In a child's room it is a map; in an adult's study it is a quieter thing — a design about direction, which the house is candid about having built the series around.

03From ground to pile

Beside pale wood and white walls the cream disappears into the floor and only the figure is left. Wool makes the surface and cotton makes the foundation underneath it. It is woven on the loom by women working in Anatolia, with the structure set mechanically and the hand work concentrated where it shows. Wool at this weight is warm to stand on and slow to flatten, and the low pile releases very little lint, which matters on a ground this pale.

05Up close to the pattern

Halıcızade gave the series that name because the designs are about what holds a person steady rather than about ornament. Is the globe motif suitable for a child's room? Yes. The figure is large, simple and set low in one corner, and the palette is cream, orange and gray rather than primary colors.

06Which furniture, which room

It reads as a map in a child's room and as an abstract composition in an adult one. Children grow out of maps, and this is drawn plainly enough that the rug will survive the day the map stops being the reason for it.
