Cream Mushroom-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Hatıl Series

The design started from mycelium, the fungal threads under a forest floor that move nutrients between trees and hold the whole system together. What is on the rug is simpler: one large mushroom with two small ones beside it, in orange and gray, low in the corner of a cream loom-woven wool piece measuring 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"). Those figures sit just above a band of orange that runs across the bottom edge, and the ground behind them shifts through soft cream and biscuit tones — closer to leaf litter in October than to a flat color.

01A question of size

The mushroom is drawn at the size it would actually be if you were lying on the floor beside it, which is the scale a child reads a rug at. The rest is open, and open is what a room with toys in it needs from a floor. Wool pile, cotton foundation, made on looms in Anatolia where machine and hand divide the labor and the division is not hidden.

02From the hand of the weaver

Wool is warm to kneel on and springs back from pressure, which makes a real difference on a floor that gets used at ground level, and it is also quieter to play on than a flatweave. It sheds and drops very little.

03Color, by the light

The name of the series is a small joke against itself: a hatıl is the beam nobody sees holding an Anatolian house up, and mycelium is the same idea underground. Cleaning is easy until it is not, and then it is a specialist's job. Loom-woven in Anatolia: wool pile on a cotton foundation. One large mushroom and two small ones in orange and gray, set in a corner. A cream to biscuit ground with an orange band along the bottom edge. 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10") — a child's room or a family sitting room. Wool is warm to kneel on and recovers from being pressed. Low shedding, low pile. Professional washing. Mushrooms feed a forest without being noticed, and a rug that gets this much use should expect the same.
