Cream Telescope-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Hatıl Series

A telescope on a tripod, planted in one corner with its barrel tipped up at nothing in particular — that is the whole drawing on this cream loom-woven wool rug from the Hatıl series, sized 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"); a warm orange band runs along the lower edge like the last of a sunset. Everything above the orange is empty cream, and the emptiness is doing work: it is the sky, and it is also the part of the floor where a child builds things.

The instrument is drawn small and precisely, tripod legs splayed, and placed off-center so that the eye travels to it rather than starting there. Two colors, one figure and a great deal of space — it will not fight a bookshelf, a bedspread or a wall covered in drawings. Wool over cotton, woven on Anatolian looms by women, with the machine setting the field and hands closing the ends.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool suits a floor used at knee height: it insulates, recovers from pressure, and does not go slick. Pile is kept low so that pieces do not vanish into it. The series is named for the hatıl, the wooden beam concealed in a stone wall that keeps the wall from falling — a good name for something meant to be underneath everything.
