Gray Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Heritage Series

A gray wool rug with a vintage pattern, loom-woven in Kütahya, that reads the way a photograph looks after twenty years in a window frame: the drawing is all there, and the contrast has gone out of it.

01What the yarn is

Wool pile with viscose worked in, over a cotton foundation. The rug covers 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"). Heritage Series. Light and dark grays move across the field with nothing to stop them, so the pattern drifts instead of repeating, and the eye finds an edge only where a tone changes. Under a window the surface separates into three or four grays; after dark it closes into one.

02Color that shifts through the day

The house places it in front of white or gray upholstery, with terracotta, red or blue carried in the smaller objects — it is quiet enough to take a strong accent color without arguing with it. Loom-woven means machine and hand share the piece: the structure is laid down on the loom in Kütahya, and the finishing is hand work.

03How it feels underfoot

Most of the pile is wool, with viscose yarns run in beside it to put a low shine on the pattern, and the base underneath is cotton. A short pile gives off almost nothing, which keeps the vacuuming simple. Heritage runs in small numbers, so the tone and the wear of the drawing are never quite repeated from one rug to the next.
