Gray Abstract Loom-Woven Wool and Viscose Rug

Like a photograph that has been left to dissolve, the drawing on this rug never quite settles into a shape. Grays run into one another across the field with no edge you could point to, and the viscose passages catch light in patches so the pattern seems to appear and recede as you move.

There is no order to find in it and no confusion either. Among colored furniture it does the balancing — it takes the loudest tones in a room down a step without adding anything of its own. We put these down most often in large living rooms and under beds, where their job is to hold the floor rather than decorate it. The technique is loom-weaving in India, where hand and machine work meet at the same frame.

01What the yarn is

Wool makes the surface, so a footstep does not stay in it; viscose carries the pattern and gives it the low shine against the matt ground; cotton beneath keeps the whole thing stable. At 2,700 g/m² this is a tight weave, and the 10 mm pile puts it at ordinary rug thickness — the familiar feel, not a novelty one. It cleans up well under a professional wash.
