The color is closer to wet earth than to chocolate — dark, warm, with a little green in it. 01The origin of the pattern

The figures step across the field at a scale you take in from standing height, and because they are only a shade lighter than the ground the rug never becomes the loudest thing in the room. Put it under beige, ecru or pale walnut and it settles the palette; put it in a room of white walls and black metal and it supplies the only warmth in the space.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The small size is a doorway rug and the large one is a sitting-room rug, and they are not the same purchase. The knot count is high and every row is hand-tied. Cotton is the foundation, the pile is a cotton-and-wool blend, and bamboo viscose appears nowhere except in the pattern, which is why the figures come up bright at one angle and vanish at another.

03To make it last

One practical note: a dark brown pile shows lint and pale hair the way a dark coat does, so it wants a vacuum more often than it wants washing. When it does want washing, that is a workshop's job. Hand-knotted in India at a high knot density, on a cotton foundation. Cotton and wool in the pile, bamboo viscose in the damask figures. A dark, earth-toned brown with the figures a shade lighter than the ground. 90 × 150 cm (2'11" × 4'11") for a doorway, 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10") for a sitting room. Warm against beige and walnut; the only warmth in a white-and-black room. Shows pale lint and hair — vacuum often. Professional washing. It is the rug you stop noticing after a week and would miss immediately if it went.
