On the surface: Wool, Bamboo, Cotton. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Traditional pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is white, brown, colorful.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cream under a brown damask repeat, hand-knotted in India
Three fibers, each doing one job: wool for the surface, bamboo viscose for the sheen, cotton for the foundation underneath. The rug is hand-knotted in India, 172 × 245 cm (5'8" × 8'0"), cream, with a damask repeat running across the whole field in brown.
A single piece. Damask came into rugs from cloth and brought the habits of cloth with it — an all-over repeat on a regular grid, no center, no hierarchy, the same weight of ornament everywhere.
On a rug that has one practical consequence: the composition survives being half covered, so a sofa can stand on it and nothing important disappears. The brown figures against cream are drawn at a scale that reads from standing height and dissolves into texture from a chair. Knotted by hand in India, the pile wool carrying bamboo viscose, with cotton running in the warp and weft below.
The viscose is what makes the brown look wet under a lamp and dry under a window, and it is also the fiber to be careful with, because it marks where it is walked and it stains where something is spilled on it, and neither of those is fixable at home.
Cream compounds the problem. If a rug has to go under a dining table, this is not that rug. Knotted by hand in India, the pile wool with bamboo viscose through it. Cotton foundation carrying the tension. 172 × 245 cm (5'8" × 8'0"), around four square meters. All-over damask repeat in brown on cream, with no center to lose under furniture. The viscose passages shift between wet-looking and matte as the light changes. It marks where it is walked and stains where something is spilled. Not a rug for under a dining table. Professional washing.
One piece. Cream and brown is what people reach for when the floor should stop asking for attention, and a damask is the drawing that agrees to that.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
