Four things that set this rug apart

Handwoven

The direction of a hand-tied pile is never exactly the same across the whole rug, and light breaks differently in each area. The rug reads in two tones from its two ends.

Wool surface

The outer surface of wool fiber holds liquid out for a while and a stain does not reach the base of the pile at once. Treated immediately, it leaves no mark.

Modern pattern

Modern pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is multicolor.

The story of this rug

Three meters by four and a bit: at 308 × 427 cm (10'1" × 14'0") this is a rug a room gets arranged around rather than one that is placed into it. Multicolor Abstract Wool and Bamboo Viscose Handwoven Rug, Maison Series, hand-knotted in India onto a cotton warp, and also woven at 248 × 305 cm (8'2" × 10'0"). Maison is drawn abstract, which on a rug means no medallion in the middle and no border round the edge — the composition is fluid and asymmetric, and it does not need the furniture centered on it.

01After the color

Color does the structural work instead. Wool absorbs light and goes matte while the bamboo viscose passages return it directionally and read as sheen, so one field shifts between flat and bright depending on where in the room you are standing. A multicolored ground is easier to furnish against than a single-color one, because whatever gets picked up in a cushion or a chair is already somewhere in the rug. Three fibers, three jobs.

Every knot is tied by hand, over weeks, in workshops in India. Bamboo viscose is the fiber to be careful with — it marks where it is walked on, and the marks clear when the pile is brushed back rather than clearing by themselves. Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
