Gray Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Şahzade Series

Gray is a modern intervention in a five-hundred-year-old drawing. Oushak was woven in madder red and soft yellow; putting its large-scale floral on a gray ground is a recent decision, and it is what makes this handwoven wool rug — 151 × 195 cm (4'11" × 6'5"), made in Afghanistan, with cotton and synthetic declared beside the wool — work in rooms where a red one would not.

01The origin of the pattern

One piece. What gray does to a classical pattern is remove its period. The geometry survives intact — the wide border, the corner pieces, the open field between them — but the palette signal that would place the rug in the sixteenth century is gone, and the drawing reads as ornament rather than as history.

02Color that shifts through the day

That is precisely why gray Oushaks sell into interiors where nothing else is old. It is also why they date faster than the red ones do: red has been correct for five hundred years and gray has been correct for about fifteen. Woven by hand in Afghanistan.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool takes the pile, cotton the structure, and a synthetic component is declared with them. Gray shows dust in a way red never will, particularly on a cool-toned ground under north light, and it is the ground color most likely to need vacuuming to look the way it did in the photograph.

04What it sits well with

Against that, the piece is the one classical rug that goes into a room of pale walls and black metal without the room having to accommodate it. Professional washing.
