02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool yarn

The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.

02

Classic pattern

Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is gray.

03

Afghanistan workshop

This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.

Technical details

Gray Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

The design behind this one descends from the oldest knotted pile rug that survives anywhere: the Pazyryk, lifted out of a frozen Scythian tomb in the Altai and kept now at the Hermitage. Gray Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — 176 × 240 cm (5'9" × 7'10"), knotted entirely by hand in Afghanistan, gray and pastel throughout.

01The origin of the pattern

One piece. What the Şahzade drawing takes from Pazyryk is the discipline of the borders rather than the animals: concentric frames, each one narrower than the last, closing on a field of Oushak motifs. The palette is where this piece separates from the rest of the series. Soft grays carry the ground, and the pastels laid into the motifs are pale enough that from the doorway the rug reads as one tone and only resolves into pattern once you are standing on it.

02The mark of slow weaving

Gray of this warmth sits with oak, with black metal and with almost any upholstery, which is the practical argument for it. Afghan weaving culture is centuries deep, and every knot here was tied by hand within it.

03How it feels underfoot

The surface is wool and nothing else. Underneath, the structure runs on cotton carrying a small quantity of recycled synthetic thread — added for durability, and stated rather than glossed over.

04From the hand of the weaver

Doubling the knots is why the piece took months instead of weeks. The pile is short and tightly packed, which leaves dust very little to settle into and means a vacuum clears it in one pass. Professional washing when it is needed, and nothing improvised in the meantime. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan, doubled knots, months at the loom. Wool pile over a cotton base holding a small quantity of recycled synthetic thread. Gray ground with pastel Oushak motifs inside concentric borders. Drawn after the Pazyryk rug, the oldest knotted rug known. A short, dense pile, which leaves dust little to settle into. 176 × 240 cm (5'9" × 7'10") — sitting room, study or bedroom. Professional washing. What is the Pazyryk rug? It is the oldest knotted pile rug that survives, excavated from a Scythian tomb frozen into the permafrost of the Altai and dated to roughly the fifth century BC.

05Color, by the light

It is held at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, and its bordered, framed composition is what the Şahzade drawing borrows. Why is a gray rug easier to place than a colored one? Gray carries no temperature of its own, so it neither warms nor cools the colors around it. In practice the upholstery, the wood and the wall color set the mood of the room, and the rug agrees with all three instead of competing with any of them. Pale gray shows the traffic route across a room before a dark rug would, and that path is the first thing a washer will lift out of it.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?
