The story of this rug

Months of hand knotting go into nearly seven square meters: a wool rug of the Anadolu Şal Series, 250 × 270 cm (8'2" × 8'10") and close enough to square to read as one, its field divided into vertical bands of mustard, brick, navy, burgundy and earth, enclosed by a dark green border.

01Which furniture, which room

One piece. Square rugs are rare because square rooms are rare, and where a room does have that shape nothing else will sit in it properly. The bands run the full height of the field, and each carries its own geometry and its own stylized plants, drawn after the tradition of Zara, a district of Sivas.

02The tone of the ground

Colors alternate warm and cool along the width, which is what produces the rhythm. The dark green frame around the outside is the only calm element in the whole composition, and without it the color would have nowhere to stop. Anatolian women wove it, over months, from first-grade fleece — chosen for luster, soft to the hand, with a full weight when you take a corner of it. Rugs in this series were never designed to agree with an existing color scheme; they were designed to be the color in a room.

03When you walk in

Set beside plain wood and gray furniture they look modern and old at once. Weaving of this kind is diminishing in Anatolia year by year. Dust it out and vacuum it, and send it away for washing. Hand-knotted in Anatolia by women weaving traditionally, over months. 250 × 270 cm (8'2" × 8'10") — nearly square, for a salon or a large room. Vertical bands of mustard, brick, navy, burgundy and earth tones. Zara drawing from central Anatolia, carried band by band across the field. The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
