Multicolor Patchwork Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Anadolu Şal Series

Hereke, Bünyan, Ladik, Isparta: four weaving towns, four drawing traditions, assembled into one floor. This is a hand-knotted wool patchwork rug from the Anadolu Şal series, 240 × 301 cm (7'10" × 9'11"), made in Anatolia by women who still weave for a living.

01The tone of the ground

Reds run into greens, navy into orange. There is one of it, at this size, with these panels. Read it panel by panel and the geography comes apart again. One square carries flowers drawn in the fine Hereke manner; another holds the blockier geometry of a village loom; a third is nothing but border, repeated. Because each panel came from a different tradition, the reds are not the same red and the greens not the same green, and the small mismatches are what stop the rug looking manufactured.

02When you walk in

Laid in a plainly furnished sitting room — neutral upholstery, bare floorboards — the rug becomes the only historical object in the space, and behaves like one. Every knot in it was tied by hand, in first-grade wool chosen for a softness and a shine closer to textile yarn than to ordinary rug yarn.

03Coming off the loom

A rug of this size takes months of work, and it was assembled from woven panels rather than knotted as one field, so no two pieces of it lie at exactly the same tension — that slight unevenness is the signature of a patchwork put together by hand. Hand-knotting on this scale is getting scarcer in Anatolia every year, which is a fact about the world rather than a reason to hurry. Professional washing, and nothing else. Hand-knotted in Anatolia, entirely by hand, over months of work. First-grade wool, chosen for softness and natural luster. Patchwork panels carrying motifs from Hereke, Bünyan, Ladik and Isparta. Reds, greens, navy and orange, none of them matched across panels. 240 × 301 cm — a single piece, at a single size. Panel tensions vary slightly, which is how a hand-assembled patchwork reads. Professional washing. Why are the colors slightly different from panel to panel? Each panel was woven in a different tradition, with wool dyed in a separate lot.

04Which tone on the ground

The reds and greens therefore do not match exactly across the seams. That variation is inherent to a hand-assembled patchwork rug and is not a fault in the piece. Is this rug repeatable in another size? No.

05Knot by knot, by hand

It was assembled from a particular set of woven panels at 240 × 301 cm. Another patchwork rug in the Anadolu Şal series would carry different panels, different motifs and a different color balance, so this one exists only once. In fifty years the panels will have faded at different rates, and the rug will be more obviously four rugs than it is today.
