Terracotta Plain Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Focus Series

Terracotta is the whole design. A plain Focus-series rug, woven on Indian looms from wool, bamboo viscose and cotton, with the color running dark through light and back to dark across the width, so the surface has movement without carrying a single motif.

01Color that shifts through the day

Eight sizes are made, among them an 80 × 300 cm runner and, at the top of the range, 240 × 340 cm, which is 7'10" by 11'2". The tone gathers orange, brick, red and coral in one place, which is why it does not behave like a flat orange: in daylight it leans brick, under a warm bulb it goes toward coral.

02Coming off the loom

What keeps a plain rug from looking industrial is the faint watered shimmer left by the weave, visible when you look along the surface rather than down at it. Against oak or walnut, or with smoke, cream, beige and mink around it, the terracotta holds a neutral room together at exactly one point.

03What Wool does

In a room already full of color it will fight. Wool, bamboo viscose and cotton are worked together on traditional Indian looms, where the loom lays the structure and people do the rest — soft underfoot, and softer than the hours in it might suggest.

04Color, by the light

One instruction from the maker that is worth following: keep it out of long direct sunlight, because a color built out of reds is the kind that fades first.
