Gray Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Tempus Series

Gray ground, pale orange lozenges and ring-shaped links scattered over it, and no border anywhere to close them in: a Tempus-series rug, loom-woven, its wool pile carried on a cotton foundation, woven in the Aegean region of Türkiye and made in three sizes, the middle size 160 × 230 cm (5'3" × 7'7"), which most rooms take. The drawing is soft-edged rather than sharp, the way a pattern goes when it has spent thirty summers under a window, and the field around it has been left empty so that the fading is the thing you notice.

01Reading the motif

Leaving off the outer frame is the unusual decision here: a classical composition without a border stops reading as a reproduction and starts reading as a fragment of one. Beside a bone-white sofa, black metal legs and a single unshaded lamp it turns loft; on pale oak boards it is the only object in a Scandinavian room with any age on it. Wool above, cotton below, worked together on a loom in the Aegean and closed by hand at both ends.

02The rule of care

Height of pile is moderate and the setting is close, which keeps grit up where a vacuum can reach it instead of letting it work down into the foundation. Halıcızade keeps only a handful of Tempus drawings in production, chosen out of several hundred and not by accident.

One thing to be plain about: the washed-out look is the design, so a buyer who wants crisp, high-contrast pattern should take a different rug from the series. Loom-woven in the Aegean region of Türkiye — the structure goes on mechanically, the finishing is done by hand. Wool pile on a cotton foundation. Faded orange lozenges and chain links on an open gray field, with no outer border. Medium pile, tightly packed, and quick to vacuum. Carries the Halıcızade tree-of-life mark. Three sizes: 130 × 190, 160 × 230 and 200 × 300 cm. Send it to a rug washer rather than cleaning it at home. In ten years the orange will have gone another shade quieter, which is the only direction it was ever traveling.
