Red Vintage-Pattern Round Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Tempus Series

A rectangle scatters its pattern into four corners; a circle has none, and that is the argument for the round version — a loom-woven wool and cotton rug in red, with navy wheat-ear and tree forms branching in toward the middle and small stars and dots between them, woven in Türkiye's Aegean region, at 160 cm and 200 cm across (5'3" and 6'7").

The motifs thicken as they approach the center, so the eye is drawn inward without being told to go. A thin ring closes the field, and outside it a wide cream border carries round rosettes in red and green at even intervals all the way around. Nothing on the surface is a beginning or an end, which is what the circular format buys you and what no rectangular rug can do. Set against a leather sofa and dark wooden side tables it makes a classical, warm corner of a room; left on its own inside an entrance it does the work of a welcome mat that somebody thought about.

Machine and hand split the labor: the loom does the body, and a weaver finishes the ends once it is off. Wool and cotton are worked together, at medium thickness and packed tight, so the surface stays flat under a chair leg and gives dust little to lodge in. A tree of life is woven in — the Halıcızade mark. The same vintage drawing is also made rectangular, and in other colors, for anyone who wants the pattern without the circle.
