The story of this rug

3,900 grams to the square meter, at a pile ten millimeters deep: those two numbers are what this rug is, before its color is. A plain gray loom-woven rug in 35% wool and 65% viscose, woven in India, offered at 170 × 240 cm and 200 × 300 cm — 5'7" × 7'10" and 6'7" × 9'10". It is among the rugs this house sends out most often. From across a room it is a flat pastel gray and nothing else.

01The mark of slow weaving

Up close a fine linear movement appears in the weave, the trace of an older hand-weaving habit left in a modern surface, and the viscose turns the whole floor bright from one side and deep from the other. That is not printed and not dyed in; it is the pile lying one way and the light coming the other.

02After the color

The gray sits in the middle of the range — cool enough beside black metal and dark green, warm enough not to fight beige and mink. Wool carries the body of the yarn and viscose carries the face, which is the reason the surface is both firm and slippery-soft.

03From the hand of the weaver

The weaving is done in India on looms where hand work and machine knotting are used together. Ten millimeters is a conventional rug depth, thick enough to feel underfoot without stopping a door, and the density is high for a loom-woven rug. Daily care is a vacuum; anything more should go to a washer. Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
