Cream Oushak-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zade Series

There is a tree of life hidden in the border, small enough that most people find it late. It sits on a cream Oushak-pattern rug, loom-woven from Tencel® and cotton in the Oushak district, 200 × 300 cm; in feet, 6'7" × 9'10"; with large flower forms opened out across the field. Classical Oushak drawing is usually carried by madder red and indigo.

01Color, by the light

Taking it down to cream is what the Zade series was for — Halıcızade set out to make something other than the rug that is already in everyone's house — and the effect is that the flowers become shape rather than color. On a cream ground they read as relief, catching light on one side of each petal and losing it on the other.

02When you touch it

Through the day the whole face travels between matt and shine, so the same rug looks crisp at nine in the morning and soft at six. The tree of life stands for continuity, which is why the house puts it in the frame rather than the field: it is a maker's mark, not part of the pattern.

03The mark of slow weaving

Weaving is done on mechanical looms in Oushak, after which each piece travels to a household in the district, where the fringes are finished by hand. Tencel® with cotton makes a soft, low-shedding surface with a natural movement between dull and bright. The name is a registered lyocell brand and this house is licensed to use it.
