Tencel is a brand name; the fiber itself is called lyocell and is made from wood cellulose. It gives the surface a shine close to silk.
Modern pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads gray, terracotta.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Warm orange breaking into gray, wool matt and Tencel® bright
On a calm gray ground a wide field of orange and cream arrives from one side, like sunlight through a door pushed open: a loom-woven wool and Tencel® rug from the Zima series, cotton in the foundation, measuring 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), woven at Uşak and Kütahya. Every Zima drawing is a version of the same moment, the instant of crossing a threshold, and this is the loudest of them. The gray does nothing at all until the warm block comes in and takes a third of the surface.
Nothing contains it — there is no border — so it reads as light rather than as a shape. Beside gray and anthracite upholstery the rug settles down; put copper or brass anywhere in the room and the orange lifts out of the floor to answer it. Two fibers in the pile, and they are not doing the same job.
Wool gives the surface its body and its matt tone; Tencel®, which is Lenzing's lyocell and comes from wood pulp, gives it the shine that shifts when you shift. Cotton sits underneath as the foundation and never shows.
On the loom the structure is laid mechanically and the finish is hand work, a division of labor that gets close to a knotted rug in the hand without claiming to be one. There is wool in the pile, which is worth knowing if wool is something you avoid. Each piece is numbered as it comes off. Pile of wool and Tencel®; foundation of cotton. Warm orange and cream breaking into a gray field, with no border to hold it. Woven on looms at Kütahya and at Uşak, by women. Wool carries the matt body, Tencel® the movement of light. Measuring 200 × 300 cm, sized to sit under a full seating group. Contains wool; consider it carefully if that matters to you. Halıcızade tree of life, plus an individual weave number. Professional washing. Give it a decade and the orange will have softened by half a shade, and the rug will look more like the thing it was always imitating.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
