Gray Abstract Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zima Series

Two lines of Rumi sit behind the drawing — how good it is to alight somewhere each day, how fine to flow without going cloudy or freezing — and what came out of them is gray on gray: a loom-woven Zima rug in Tencel®, layered light and dark, with a doorway showing faintly through the haze. There is no medallion and no center.

01Color, by the light

Light and dark gray fold into one another across the field like a fog bank, and the geometry inside it is so reduced that it takes a moment to find: a rectangle, an opening, a threshold implied rather than drawn. That reticence is the point of the series, which is meant to give a floor you can think on rather than one that asks for attention.

02What the yarn is

In a room of black metal and pale plaster it turns cool; with walnut and wool upholstery it warms by a full step. A cotton foundation carries a Tencel® pile. The looms are in Kütahya and Uşak — the loom lays the field, hands close it, and the house says which is which rather than calling the result hand-knotted. The faint luster of Tencel® is what allows so many grays to stay distinguishable instead of collapsing into one; on a matt wool the same drawing would disappear.

03The mark of slow weaving

Keep to a vacuum at home and let a workshop do the washing. Loom-woven in Kütahya and Uşak from Tencel® on a cotton foundation. Layered light and dark gray, with a threshold form barely legible in it. Designed for Zima after two lines of Rumi about flowing rather than freezing. The Tencel® sheen is what keeps the grays separate from one another. Sizes vary by piece. Professional washing; a vacuum in between. Gray is the color people choose when they do not want to choose; this one makes it look like a decision.
